In this short interview, Rebeka Hoblik shares her experience as a student in the Master in Economic Research program at CERGE-EI. She is currently in her second year and holds both American and Czech citizenship. After graduating from high school in the United States, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Anglo-American University in Prague. In the future, she plans to pursue research roles in economics.

What do you find most appealing about economics?

I find economics appealing because it provides tools to analyze interesting questions about markets, behavior, and much more. The field is broad, which allows me to explore different areas of research. Acquiring the skills to conduct empirical research in economics is a major advantage of the program at CERGE-EI.

What aspects of studying at CERGE-EI have you found most valuable—academically, professionally, or personally?

The small class sizes at CERGE-EI make a significant difference in the learning experience. They allow for better interaction with faculty and more opportunities to engage in class discussions. The environment also helps you get to know your classmates well, which is beneficial for collaborating on problem sets and projects. This setup makes it easier to receive personalized feedback from professors.

Which courses or topics at CERGE-EI have you found most challenging? Which courses are your favorites?

The coursework at CERGE-EI is rigorous, which makes it even more rewarding when you master the material. My favorite courses have been applied microeconomics, which covered game theory and information economics, and statistics and econometrics. These were essential for learning the methodological tools needed for research. The mathematical aspects can be demanding, but they are necessary.

How would you compare the academic rigor at CERGE-EI to what you experienced during your undergraduate studies?

I should clarify that I completed my undergraduate studies in Prague, not in the United States. I can say that the Master’s program at CERGE-EI is naturally more rigorous than my undergraduate program. It also requires more independent analytical thinking compared to undergraduate coursework.

What has it been like living and studying in Prague, and how has the location contributed to your overall study experience?

Prague is well-suited for students, with good infrastructure and excellent public transport. Another advantage is the international student community, which brings exposure to different perspectives on economic issues. The city also offers a great balance between a variety of available activities and an environment conducive to focused study.
