Talking Economics Emerging Scholars: Ella Sargsyan

The new podcast series Talking Economics Emerging Scholars is dedicated to showcasing the research and inspiring journeys of CERGE-EI PhD in Economics fresh graduates. Our first guest is Ella Sargsyan, an empirical economist specializing in development economics.

Ella’s academic journey included research visits to MIT and Columbia University. She recently defended her Essays in Development Economics dissertation and will join UCLouvain as a postdoctoral researcher.

Ella’s research includes examining coping strategies of households during the post-Soviet transition, effects of armed conflicts on gender preferences in Nigeria, and the impacts of the 1988 Armenian earthquake on gender preferences. She also worked on civic engagement in post-war Armenia, digitizing voter lists to study the effect of war casualties on voting behavior.

She plans to continue her research at UC Leuven while joining a project on conflict hotspots and migration corridors in low and middle-income countries.
