Investing in Excellence: An Interview with Tereza, a former Alumni Excellence Fellowship recipient

Tereza has been awarded the Alumni Excellence Fellowship for two academic years (2022/2023 and 2023/2024) for her outstanding academic performance.

Tereza, you’re now in your third year of PhD studies. How has your experience evolved since you started your studies?
Originally, I came from a non-economics background, which made the initial transition to economics both challenging and exciting. Over the past three years, I’ve grown immensely, evolving from someone focused on absorbing foundational knowledge to taking my first steps as an independent researcher. What’s been particularly rewarding is seeing how my enthusiasm for learning and exploration has not only endured but deepened as I’ve developed a more profound understanding of the field.

What makes CERGE-EI special in your eyes?
CERGE-EI is truly special because it offers a US-style PhD program that is unique in our country, combining rigorous training with an international standard of research. One of the aspects I value most is the close relationship between students and faculty, supported by the program’s low student-to-faculty ratio. This environment has provided me with invaluable opportunities for collaboration and mentorship, which have greatly contributed to my academic and personal growth.
Another standout feature is the multicultural community at CERGE-EI. Engaging with peers and faculty from diverse backgrounds has broadened my horizons and enriched my understanding of economics in a global context.

Why do you think financial support is so important for students at CERGE-EI?
Financial support is crucial for us as students at CERGE-EI, as it allows us to create a stable and supportive environment where we can fully focus on our research and academic growth. It helps us build a workspace that fosters concentration and creativity while also enabling us to maintain our well-being. I believe this balance is essential for generating new, innovative ideas and making meaningful contributions to the field of economics.

How has receiving the Alumni Excellence Fellowship impacted your studies and life at CERGE-EI?
I was truly surprised and deeply honored to receive this recognition, and I felt immense gratitude toward the people who believed in me and my potential.
The fellowship has profoundly impacted my studies, especially during the first two years, which were particularly intense. Knowing there were people supporting me eased the pressure and gave me the strength and encouragement to overcome challenges. It also reminded me that I am part of a supportive community that values dedication, perseverance, and hard work — values I strive to uphold in my own journey.

What would you say to alumni and supporters considering donating to the Student Support Fund to help future students?
I would like to sincerely thank the alumni and supporters who have contributed to the Student Support Fund. Your generosity has had a profound impact on me, not only easing financial pressures but also boosting my confidence and motivation. To those considering supporting future students, your contribution can truly make a world of difference.
